Warehouses are getting creative with fulfilling orders.

In an effort to be better prepared for the spikes in demand during the busy holiday season, many businesses are making changes to their warehouses. Adding more material handling equipment to handle the rise in inventory is one place to start, as well as increasing the amount of manpower in the warehouse. However, the entire supply chain could see some changes as well.

According to Supply Chain Dive, more companies are moving toward a flexible supply chain to allow for pivots during peak times, refocus of certain geographical areas and more space for the various kinds of inventory. Since the rise of e-commerce, it has become more apparent just how outdated some warehouses are for inventory, and the news provider notes that online service has caused a rise in need for more distribution points.

Typically you can get an idea of what to expect for the holiday season based on predictions. According to Material Handling & Logistics, it’s good management practice to try and look at trends from previous years, as in some cases up to 50 percent of total business comes in during the last 30 days of the year. You can take that equation and use it based on what this year’s sales have been.
