Keeping patients healthy is the main part of working in a hospital, but could the facility be wasting these efforts? It’s important to have a cleaning crew complete with janitorial carts who will work around the clock making sure the area is clean.

When individuals enter a hospital due to illness, it’s the goal to get them better and discharge them. However, a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that one in 25 hospital patients acquire infections while they’re at the hospital.

According to CNN, this made up for nearly 722,000 infections within the last year, causing approximately 75,000 deaths. The news provider reports that pneumonia and surgical site infections were the most common ailments for patients.

The Washington Post reports that getting these kinds of infections under control is a priority for the CDC, particularly as people are becoming more resistant to antibiotics. The news provider reports the agency will continue to monitor the situation on a case-by-case basis.

In addition to keeping the facilities clean, patients can take matters into their own hands – literally. The CDC reports patients should wash their hands frequently whenever they’re in a healthcare facility. This way, they can reduce the amount of bacteria they come into contact with.
